Action to Protect Your Idea

Once it has been decided what IP protection might be suitable for your idea, action may need to be taken to protect it, by filing a patent, trademark or registered design application. You can file these applications yourself, however in a lot of cases it is advisable to enlist the help of a patent or trademark agent to write and file the application for you.

Patenting, if it applies to your idea, can be a complicated process, which involves skill and strategic planning to obtain the best protection. A patent agent should be able to advise whether it is the right time to file a patent application, or whether best to wait, i.e. if the idea is not yet finalised.
