Spin-out companies and partnering

UMIP typically generates 4-5 new spin-out companies per year. This often works in partnership with more established companies, either to develop and commercialise the technology, or in a funding capacity, or both. Technology tends to be commercialised in a spin-out company if is in a new field with many applications.

Licensing

UMIP transfers in the range of 15-20 technologies to industry per year, in exchange for royalties, milestone payments, or a combination of both. IP tend to be commercialised through licensing if the applications for it are development or improvement on existing products or processes.

• UMIP rarely assigns IP to licensees outright
• License agreements can be exclusive or non-exclusive, depending on
  the circumstances
