UMIP is a Limited Company, wholly owned by The University of Manchester

It is one of the largest and most successful technology transfer companies in the UK. It is also the largest in the UK North West and has a large and diverse portfolio of technology commercialisation projects. Manchester University itself is ranked no.5 in Europe league table of universities compiled by Jiao Tong University in Shanghai.

UMIP typically forms 4-5 start-up companies per year, and transfers 15-20 technologies per year into industry through licensing agreements, with a well proven business model and support infrastructure. Compared to many other universities, many of the individuals at UMIP have an industry background. This means that UMIP understands the needs and pressures of industry very well, making it a particularly effective bridge into academia.

As important contributor to the UK economy UMIP sees local and national governmental organisations as important partners in both generating economic value and achieving direct operational success. It does this by providing input into future policy, the support of regional and national innovation initiatives, and dialogue to keep objectives and expectations aligned.
