UMIP is a Limited Company wholly owned by The University of Manchester, with the specific role of commercialisation of the intellectual property of the university.

UMIP annually forms 4-5 start-up companies each year and at any one time typically has 40 companies in its management portfolio, ranging from newly formed companies through to those from which UMIP is seeking exit. It supports this process with a well proven and professional business model and business managers with industry experience. UMIP also has two funds of its own to support its projects, a proof of concept fund of €1.25M and the UMIP Premier Fund of €50M.

The University of Manchester is ranked as the 5th best University in Europe so the breadth and depth of opportunities coming from the research activities at the university is significant.

A valuable contribution to this process is the input from individuals with business experience to help guide, mentor and coach some of these start-up companies. These are typically high calibre people who have had success in senior positions in industry and now want to help early stage companies benefit from their experience in a part time capacity. This can be a personally very enjoyable activity.
