UMIP is a limited company wholly owned by The University of Manchester, founded to commercialise relevant University research results.

THE UMIP MISSION
UMIP contributes to the aims and objectives of The University’s “Exemplary Knowledge and Technology Transfer” agenda by providing Intellectual Property (IP) management and commercialisation activities:

UMIP enhances the reputation and value of the University by:

  • transferring science and technology to the market place through IP sale, licence or spin-out.
  • making an important contribution to the economy regionally, nationally and internationally and to the quality of public life.
  • reinvesting returns from successful IP commercialisation activities back to the University, for example, through income from the sale of spin-out company shares or royalty income from licence agreements.

The University of Manchester Intellectual Property Limited ("UMIP") acts solely as agent for the University in relation to any matter relating to intellectual property and know how created at the University ("IP"). This is whether such IP is created by employees, students or others. UMIP does not represent anyone else in such matters. If anyone else requires advice in relation to such IP then they must take their own independent legal advice.

“A dynamic UK
centre of innovation and value creation ”

Clive Rowland, CEO, UMIP.

Since the industrial revolution Manchester has been world-famous for its inventions, discoveries and research, a large proportion of which has come out of The University of Manchester (down the years the University has been the alma-mater of no fewer than twenty Nobel Prize winners plus dozens of scientists and technologists with international reputations).

Today the University is the largest in the UK, with over 30,000 students and 4,500 academic and research staff.

UMIP - The University of Manchester Intellectual Property (IP) Commercialisation Company - is responsible for helping to turn the University's world-leading research into world-beating companies. In the last five years businesses that have emerged from the University have attracted over £150 million in funding.

We are confident that in the coming years this level of success will only increase, especially with the introduction of the UMIP Premier Fund - a ground-breaking initiative establishing a highly creative vehicle for providing academics with access to capital to develop their research.

Indeed, by 2015 Manchester aims to become one of the top 25 research universities in the world. UMIP looks forward to helping to bring about the realisation of this ambition and to working with researchers from every faculty to turn their ideas into commercial reality.
